Oppon
I eventually want to type this up via The Homebrewery with proper art and formatting, but in the meantime enjoy this wall of text!
The Orchid Shogunate
Hugging the coast of the Western most part of Correl lies the Orchid Shogunate of Oppon. To the east lies the Shimmering Forest, and beyond that the feral tribes of Aalbor. To the south, over the Slate Mountains, stand the city-states of Accipia.
The people of The Shogunate are extremely disciplined and respected. Much like the knights of Moravia, Opponese warriors fight for valor and honor, for themselves and their family, for their life and the afterlife. For most men, serving the Shogunate is a great privilege, a chance to be remembered like the warriors of legend.
Oppon was once segmented into various kingdoms, but has since been united under a single Shogun for several hundred years.
Family
Because of Opponese religious and cultural norms the nucleus of a traditional familial unit consists of a mother, a father, and five children. The number 5 is central in Oppon and having more or less children is considered contrary to societal standards.
The order from eldest to youngest child therefore is also of great importance: often a label one carries with them for their entire life. Even certain jobs are restricted to specific children. A second born could never become a money lender at the Vaults; no one would trust them with their gold. As such any player making a character from Oppon can choose their birth order and gains the benefits thereof.
Firstborn
The firstborn child, the eldest of the family, carries many responsibilities. If their father or mother falls ill, it is their duty to aid and protect the family as best they can. They must also set an example for their brothers and sisters on how to conduct oneself as an adult. This sees firstborns become responsible, ambitious, often stubborn leaders. If your character is a firstborn you gain the following benefits.
Swagger
When it comes to combat you set an example for your allies. If you have the highest initiative roll of your allies your first attack is with advantage.
Enduring Sacrifice
You are ready and willing to take a punch for any of your allies. If an ally within 30 ft. of you fails a saving throw that you successfully made you can choose to swap results.
Second Born
The second born child has all the esteem of being one of the eldest children without the burden of being the firstborn. However, being the second born means they are that close to being the most important, but are not. This leads second born children to become mischievous, cunning, even envious scoundrels. If your character is a second born you gain the following benefits.
Forked Tongue
Your life of mischief has put you in some difficult situations, but you’ve always been able to weasel your way out. You gain expertise in the Deception skill.
Hold a Grudge
You do not forgive easily. If you are critically hit by a creature, and remain conscious, you can use your reaction to attack that creature.
Third Born
The third born child is wedged directly between the elder children and the younger children, belonging to neither group. Their position in the middle allows them to see things from different perspectives, forcing them to break up the inevitable arguments and disagreements between siblings. This guides third born children down the path to become logical, compromising, sometimes idealistic peacekeepers. If your character is a third born you gain the following benefits.
Logically Sound
Your knowledge of human interaction makes it hard to outwit you. Negotiating a compromise involves knowing the difference between the truth and a lie; and you do. You gain expertise in the Insight skill.
Conciliation
Ill-tempered individuals do not listen to logic and facts, but you can calm down even the most aggressive tempers. As an action you may touch one hostile creature. For a number of turns equal to your Wisdom modifier, that creature can move or attack, but not both. This ability recharges after a long rest.
Fourth Born
The fourth born child is the first of the youngest children, but not the darling baby. The second to last child is the most likely to be overlooked, seeking rather to spend their time alone than with their other siblings. This leads fourth born children to become creative, intelligent, yet timid thinkers. If your character is a fourth born you gain the following benefits.
Prodigy
Alone time is something you cherish and utilize efficiently. Given enough time and resources there is nothing you cannot master. Either your spell save DC or your attack roll bonus increases by 1.
Out of the Spotlight
Although skillful, your apprehension makes it difficult to demonstrate your talent. You feel more comfortable performing when no one is watching. If none of your allies are within 30 ft. of you, you can double your proficiency bonus.
Fifth Born
The fifth born is the youngest and final child in a traditional Opponese familial unit. By this point a mother and father have mellowed and the last child is free to take chances while the older four children shoulder the more important tasks. This sees fifth born children become charming, free-spirited, albeit impulsive risk-takers. If your character is a fifth born you gain the following benefits.
Spontaneity
When it comes time to fight you throw caution to the wind. You may add your CHA modifier to your initiative roll instead of your DEX modifier.
Audacity
The intricate strategies of combat are often not as effective as your daring actions, to the occasional frustration of your allies. You may take the Disengage action as a bonus action.
